This Small Change Helped Me Read More And Scroll Social Media Less

Welcome to Marginal Gains

Hello, Marginal Gains community!

We're excited to have you with us once again as we explore ways to make meaningful changes in our lives.

This week:

This Small Change Helped Me Read More And Scroll Social Media Less

I've read more books in the last 3 months than I did in the previous year. All from one small change.

James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, talks about the power of your environment on your habits. But it's not just your physical environment that can have an impact.

Did you know the average person spends over 4 hours on their phone each day?

If we're spending that much time on our phones, we should make sure the environment is working for us and not against us. With this in mind, I made one change on my phone to help me develop a reading habit.

I noticed that I would reactively open a social media app as soon as I unlocked my phone.

So I made a simple change.

I removed all social media apps from my phone home screen.

I replaced them with:

  • the Kindle app,

  • Reader by Readwise (a great read later app!)

  • Obsidian (my second brain app).

Now, instead of opening Instagram or Tik Tok unconsciously, I open Kindle or Reader.

I've gone from being sucked into a social media blackhole to expanding my mind.

But it's not just that..

Since I've been using social media less, I feel more productive, more refreshed and I'm able to focus better.

It's a simple and small change but the benefits have been huge.

If you're trying to build a reading habit or just want to use social media less, try this small change out and let me know how it goes.
