Kakeibo is an old Japanese form of budgeting that has become popular again recently. It translates to "household family ledger" and was developed in 1904 by a female journalist named Hani Motoko.

The system helps to bring mindful awareness to the process of spending and budgeting by journaling your income and expenses. The first step is to track your spending and income for at least a month.

Kakeibo centers on four key questions:

  • How much money do I have or earn?

  • How much do I want to save?

  • How much am I spending?

  • Where can I improve?

There are journals and tools available to help you implement kakeibo, but it can also be done using a simple notebook.
