According to my Kindle insights, I've read 8 books in the last year. That's not including the books I'm currently reading.
In that time I've come across some great ideas that have shaped my thinking for the better.
Over the next few weeks I'll be sharing the 3 ideas that shaped my thinking the most.
This week's idea is:
1. The Plus, Minus and Equal System

The Plus, Minus and Equal System is system used by martial artist Frank Shamrock to train his students. Ryan Holiday talks about this idea in his book Ego is the enemy. It's designed as a way to help you improve your skills from different angles.
Those above you teach you the what.
Those below teach you the why.
Those equal teach you how.
But that's not all.
It's also a great system to keep you humble.
In fighting — and in life — it's easy to get some wins and think you're the next big thing.
The Plus, Minus and Equal System keeps you level headed by reminding you that there's always someone that's better than you keeping you humble. Someone below you who can help improve your understanding so you can keep growing. And someone who is able to challenge you and keep you on your toes.
Each angle gives you something different.
How it's shaped my thinking:
It's changed how I approach learning.
Before, I used to think you could only learn from those who are more experienced. Now I can see the value from learning from those at a different level to you — whether it's those above, below or at the same level.
Those Above: The What.
People above you teach you what you need to know. They give you the knowledge and expertise you lack. But that's useless without the understanding.
That's where those below you can help.
Those Below: The Why
When you teach someone else, it changes how you view the knowledge. To teach well, you have to understand the knowledge at a deeper level. Teaching is like a test. It helps you check what you know and how well you know it. But then your faced with making sure it works.
That's where those that are equal can help.
Those Equal: The How
Working with someone at an equal level let's you apply what you know to test it and identify any strengths, gaps and weaknesses. Giving you a chance to challenge yourself and grow.
When you apply the above to work and life, each interaction becomes a learning opportunity.
How I've used it:
I've started applying this in my job as a clinical pharmacist:
I have colleagues above me who share their expertise and help me when I need advice.
I mentor a colleague and helping her has deepened my knowledge.
I have colleagues at the same level as me and our discussions help refine my knowledge and check for any blind spots.
The Plus, Minus, and Equal System isn’t just for martial artists—it’s for anyone who wants to keep learning and improving.
By learning from those above, below, and equal to you, you can stay humble and keep growing.
Whether it’s in fighting, work, or life, this system makes sure you’re always moving forward.
What’s the most powerful idea you’ve read in the last year, and how has it shaped your thinking?
Share it and I'll include it in next week's issue.
