The 10/10/10 Rule: A Simple Framework for Smarter Decision-Making

Decision making hasn't always been my strength.

That's why I've always looked for mental models or frameworks that can make it easier.

One framework I've come across recently is the 10/10/10 rule. It's a simple way to help you make decisions without missing any blind spots.

The way it works is, when needing to make a big decision, you take each option and answer the following 3 questions:

How will I feel about this decision in:

  • 10 hours?

  • 10 months?

  • 10 years?

You then assess how you would feel with that decision in the short term, near future and further down the line.

Once you've done this you can then decide which decision is best based on your responses for each situation.

How does the 10/10/10 rule improves your decision making?

Answering these questions changes your decision making process in 2 ways:

1. Your decision making becomes more objective.

Instead of deciding based on your emotions and impulses. You become more rational in your thinking.

By thinking about the decision in 3 different time periods, you can distance yourself from your current situation and objectively assess the impact each decision will make.

2. It takes advantage of 2nd order thinking

1st order thinking is when you think about the immediate results of your decision.

For example - deciding to accept a new job role because it comes with a higher wage.

But 2nd order thinking helps you understand the long term risks and benefits of your decision.

Coming back to the job example above. By using 2nd order thinking you'd realise that the job comes with:

  • Longer working hours

  • A longer commute

  • Poor work life balance.

So instead of accepting the job for the immediate benefit of more money, you'd realise that the long term benefits aren't actually that good.

The 10/10/10 rule isn't just another decision-making trick – it's a mindset shift.

You avoid instant gratification by objectively assessing the results of your decision in the short term, near future and long term.

So instead of making present you happy and future you deal with the consequences, you're both happy.

Think about it: How many times have you made a decision thinking about the immediate benefits, only to wish you could take it back later when you had to deal with the long term consequences?

The 10/10/10 rule is your safeguard against those "what was I thinking?" moments.

In a world obsessed with instant gratification, the 10/10/10 rule is your secret weapon for long-term success.

Now, I'd love to hear from you.
